Mining companies in Lualaba and Nagorno-Katanga granted one-month moratorium to confine their workers onsite | DRC
Mining companies based in Lualaba and Nagorno-Katanga have one month to confine workers to their operating sites, according to a civil society document from those provinces citing the decision taken by the Minister of State for Employment, Labour, and Social Welfare, Nene Nkulu, reports the ACP.
The recommendation made by Néné Nkulu was made during a meeting held on Friday, July 3, in conjunction with the Ministers of Public Health, Dr. Eteni Longondo, and Mines Minister, Willy Kitobo, all on working trips to Lualaba province, according to the same source. In the same framework, these mining companies have been asked to release the workers who have carried out more than a month of confinement on sites of work and to get active yet under supervision by the responsible committee for compliance and isolation.
As for the Minister of Health, he insisted on monitoring the health of each worker, in order to avoid a new wave of contamination at mining sites. For their part, mining companies committed themselves to strict adherence to the instructions set by the government at the 36th meeting of the Council of Ministers, which had lifted the option of confining workers from different sectors of national life, including the mining sector.
The same source indicates the governors of the two provinces mentioned above, members of civil society organizations as well as delegates from the Federation of Congo Enterprises (FEC), took part in the meeting.
These measures are taken the day after some mining workers who were in their respective localities returned to both provinces.
