MOPANI SCOOPS TWO AWARDS AT ZCM MINING AWARDS GALA
Mopani Copper Mines Plc has scooped two awards at the Zambia Chamber of Mines (ZCM) Mining Awards Gala for the year 2021 recently held at Ndola’s Protea Hotel.
Mopani scooped the Best Performer in Social Investment for the Year 2021 and also secured the Mining Personality of the Year Award through its Operations Manager-Nkana Processing Plants, Cyril Muyoba who beat seven other contestants from other mines. Kansanshi Mining Plc was crowned Mining Company of the Year after scooping three awards out of the total eight, while Trident Mine, Barrick Lumwana and Lubambe Mine walked away with one award apiece.
Additionally, Mopani’s Technical Advisor Mine Rescue, Maron Chongo was an awarded the Excellence Award in Mine Rescue Services, a recognition of his contribution to Mine Rescue in the mining industry by ZCM.
Mopani has been crowned Mining Company of the Year more than any mining company after winning the title which gives industry-wide recognition in 2017 (for 2015 and 2016 combined), 2015 (for the 2014) and in 2014 (at the Inaugural Awards Gala for the year 2013).
Speaking at the Awards Gala, Guest of Honour, Mines Minister, Paul Kabuswe in a speech read on his behalf by Copperbelt Minister, Elisha Matambo, commended the Chamber of Mines for not only promoting excellence but also recognising best performance in the mining industry in various categories.
“I must commend the Chamber of Mines for introducing these awards to promote and recognise best practice in the industry, particularly in promoting mine safety and women participation in the industry. This is as it should be and it is a mark of the good leadership you have shown as a Chamber and the entire team,” Mr Kabuswe said.
Mopani Corporate Affairs Manager, Lorraine Tembo said wining the Social Investment Award was a confirmation of the company’s commitment to not only ensuring that it maintains his social license, but also making a meaningful contribution in uplifting the livelihoods of the communities that generously host Mopani’s operations.

The Chamber of Mines Awards are adjudicated by an independent panel of judges drawn from the academia, civil society and line government departments, including the Mine Safety Department (MSD), the Zambia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (ZEITI) and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).
This was after the company amassed the highest number of awards at the ZCM Awards Gala night held at Ndola’s Protea Hotel on Friday, November 3, 2017. Mopani earned the same industry-wide recognition in 2015 (for the 2014 Mining Company of Year) and in 2014 (at the Inaugural Awards Gala for the year 2013).
