Mozambican Fuel Companies complain of “Dramatic” Situation
The Mozambican Association of Fuel Companies (AMEPETROL) has expressed concern over the current state of the fuel sector, which they have described as “dramatic”. Despite purchasing fuel at high prices, AMEPETROL has complained that filling station prices have not been updated accordingly.
AMEPETROL President Michel Ussene has stated that the association is confident that the government understands their situation and will support them to ensure that companies can continue to operate normally.
This echoes warnings that AMEPETROL has made since the beginning of 2022.
The lack of price updates at filling stations has resulted in fuel being sold below the purchase price, which in turn increases the amount owed by the state to the companies.
Ussene has noted that the occasional decrease in crude oil prices on the international market has not lowered import costs in Mozambique, as the increase in logistics costs, such as transport and insurance, have cancelled out any potential savings.
To resolve this situation, AMEPETROL says it is searching for mechanisms that will not harm the final consumer, the government, or the companies involved.
This may include a temporary reduction in the tax burden on petroleum products.
Despite concerns over the fuel supply in Mozambique, Ussene has assured the public that there is no risk of interrupted supplies, especially during the rainy season and with Mozambique in the path of several storms.
The Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) has also dismissed any possibility of fuel supply shortages in the country.
