Russia and Senegal Strengthen Ties with Economic Collaboration Plans
Russia and Senegal, a West African country, have announced plans for deeper collaboration. In April, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova expressed confidence in Senegal’s newly elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, affirming that Russia’s ties with Senegal would be reinforced during his administration.
The Russian newspaper Sputnik recently interviewed Russian Ambassador to Senegal Dmitry Kurakov, who disclosed Russia’s intention to enhance its partnership with Senegal under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.
“We are looking forward to establishing a joint commission on economic cooperation. Now, it all depends on the Senegalese side,” Kurakov stated.
The Russian ambassador also anticipated a surge in trade turnover between both nations once an agreement on economic cooperation is reached. He mentioned Russia’s aspiration to initiate charter flights with Senegal.
“Our tourists face difficulties due to the lack of direct flights and expensive tickets. […] We hope that eventually, charter flights will commence, as we have had such experience with Gambia.
Before COVID-19, charters operated there, and it was a popular destination. I believe similar opportunities exist, though regular flights may not be feasible,” he elaborated.
Furthermore, Kurakov highlighted Russia’s assistance in training individuals to maintain Russian helicopters, noting Senegal’s interest in acquiring these aircraft.
