Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Senior Environmental Officer
Role Summary
Reporting to the Environmental Coordinator, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining environmental monitoring programs at LMC including the operation of the water treatment plants within the mine site to a standard that is compatible with international best practice and undertaken in a timely and cost-effective way.
Responsibilities
- Assist Environmental Officers in effective implementation of the Environmental Management System
- Ensure alignment with the Barrick Environmental Standards (Water Management and Conservation and Incident Reporting and Investigations)
- Administer all environmental monitoring programs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain the water management plan.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of a site wide water balance, including calibration.
- Supervise contractors and consultant’s performance as per company’s standards and procedure.
- Coordinate the environmental training matrix and ensure implementation.
- Develop and implement environmental training programs across the site where a need is identified
- Schedule environmental inspections and audits
- Ensure investigation and close out of reportable environmental incidents
- Facilitate the permit application process and ensure site operational licenses and permits are renewed, and relevant departments are aware of their license obligations.
- Prepare written reports as required, briefs for projects and or services, policies, and management plans
- Any other duties that may be assigned
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in Environmental Engineering or related Science from a recognized University
- A minimum of at least 5 years post qualification experience preferably mining Environment in a senior managerial role. (Experience in compliance, enforcement, environmental assessment, or licensing environment will be an added advantage)
- Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental management System.
- Detailed knowledge of HSE Systems and promotes a culture of safety and productivity and loss prevention.
- Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent.
- Demonstrated ability to improve a department’s safety awareness.
- High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in Zambia.
- Experience in project management
- Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas
