Tenke Fungurume Mining’s Role in Unlocking DRC’s Economic Potential
Business leaders and economic operators from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently convened at the Katanga Business Meeting forum in Kolwezi from September 11 to 12, focusing on “Unlocking the economic potential of the DRC for sustainable and equitable growth.”
Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) played a significant role in this event, participating in high-level panels and showcasing its commitment through an impressive exhibition stand.
The two-day forum explored various topics aimed at harnessing the DRC’s economic potential, with a particular emphasis on mining as a driver of the country’s development.
TFM, represented by its director of external relations, Maître Hugo Sinza, emphasized its dedication to reinvesting profits from its operations to uplift the living standards of the communities in the region.
On the first day of the forum, Professor Edouard Swana, TFM’s director of community relations, spoke on a panel discussing the “Mining sector in the service of sustainable and equitable development.”
Professor Swana highlighted TFM’s commitment to local content, citing various programs and initiatives that promote social responsibility, including support for women’s associations, the construction of the Songhai center, and the construction of a reference hospital.
Accountability to stakeholders is a cornerstone of these initiatives, ensuring social license and fostering collaboration with local socio-cultural associations, traditional leaders, political-administrative authorities, and other stakeholders.
The panel also featured distinguished speakers such as Minister of Planning Judith Suminwa Tuluka, Lualaba province Governor Fifi Masuka Saini, Chamber of Mines President Louis Watum, and the general directors of public agencies ARCA and ARSP, among other experts.
During their visit to the TFM stand, the Governor of Lualaba and the Minister of Planning, along with other delegations, were briefed on TFM’s key figures, including production and its contributions to fiscal and community development, by Director of External Relations Hugo Sinza.
TFM has been an active participant in the Katanga Business Meeting since its inception in 2015, consistently setting an example in areas such as ESG compliance, CSR execution, and community development programs.
