Worker Fatality Forces Mopani Mining Shaft Suspension
Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia has halted operations at one of its shafts in Kitwe, which is located more than 350 km north of the capital Lusaka.
This decision was made following an unfortunate incident in which a worker died. According to a statement released by the company yesterday 28th, the incident occurred at the 3360 feet level while a team of contractor employees were reportedly loading sludge into a stationary underground rail wagon.
It remains unclear what exactly led to the accident, but one contractor employee suffered fatal injuries in the process.
The company has stated that operations at the South Ore Body Shaft have been suspended for the time being, pending an investigation by government authorities.
