Zambia Backs Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024

The Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, and the Zambia Chamber of Mines have expressed their support for the Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024. This announcement follows a high-level stakeholder engagement meeting held last week.

The event, organized under the Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF), brought together representatives from the Chamber of Mines, the Mine Suppliers Association, civil society organizations, chambers of commerce, multilateral organizations, the diplomatic community, and policy think tanks to review and discuss the Bill.

Both the Ministry and the Chamber confirmed that the Bill, vital for shaping Zambia’s mining sector, will proceed through the legislative process, pending key amendments agreed upon during the dialogue.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive engagement, ensuring that all stakeholders play a crucial role in policy formulation.

Dr. Hapenga Monty Kabeta, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, praised the collaboration, stating, “This process reflects the Government’s dedication to creating a business-friendly environment that drives economic transformation, job creation, and improved livelihoods.” He also commended stakeholders for their active involvement.

Speaking on behalf of the mining sector, Zambia Chamber of Mines President Dr. Godwin Mooba Beene highlighted the importance of the PPDF framework in fostering transparent discussions.

He noted, “Today’s meeting is further evidence of the value of open dialogue. This collaboration will stabilize the mining industry and make it more attractive for investment.”

Both parties emphasized the critical role of continuous engagement under the PPDF framework, believing it will help create a conducive environment for growth and investment in Zambia’s mining sector.

The event was attended by various influential stakeholders, including Dr. Sydney Mwamba, Executive Director of PMRC, underscoring the significance of multi-stakeholder participation in shaping Zambia’s economic future.
