Zambia Secures $15 Billion from China for Africa’s Largest Copper Smelting Plant
Zambia’s government has successfully obtained $15 billion in funding from China to establish a monumental Copper Smelting Plant in the Kabompo district of the North Western Province.
This ambitious project, set to become the largest of its kind in Africa, is a joint venture between the Zambia National Service (ZNS) and a Chinese investor.
During an interactive forum with Kabompo District residents, ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi announced the commencement of this remarkable endeavor by the end of the year.
Notably, this project will be accompanied by a substantial agricultural production initiative to be introduced by the Service within the district.
Joseph Lungu, the Special Assistant to the President for Policy Compliance, emphasized President Hakainde Hichilema’s agenda to enhance economic activities and improve livelihoods as a means to transform the lives of the Zambian population.
The establishment of a Copper smelter in Chief Sikufele’s Chiefdom will further include the creation of a community development trust, ensuring direct benefits for local residents from the resources generated by the plant.
Representing Senior Chief Sikufele, Cephas Sitenge expressed the Chiefdom’s eager anticipation for the project’s initiation, revealing that 20,000 hectares of land have already been allocated to ZNS for the construction of the smelting plant and the expansion of agricultural production.
