Zambia to Fully Map Mineral Resources to Combat Illegal Mining

Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, MP, has stressed the importance of continued support and collaboration in the mining sector.

During a speech in Lusaka on August 9th, Minister Kabuswe highlighted the Government’s commitment, alongside key stakeholders, to fully map Zambia’s geological landscape. This initiative is crucial for combating illegal mining and uncovering untapped mineral resources.

Currently, only 49 percent of the country is mapped, a situation the Minister noted has worsened illegal mining activities. Once the full mapping is completed, the Government will have access to essential geological data, aiding efforts to curb illegal activities and identify unexplored minerals.

Minister Kabuswe also expressed the Government’s gratitude for the ongoing cooperation between Zambia and the European Union (EU). He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to addressing the various challenges facing the mining sector.

The Minister made these remarks during a courtesy visit from an EU delegation led by Senior Adviser Henrik Hololei. Mr. Hololei commended the partnership between Zambia and the EU on critical raw minerals, which he believes will significantly benefit the country.

He noted that the Finnish Geological Survey Department is working with the Ministry of Mines officers to ensure the success of the ongoing aerial surveys. These surveys are expected to promote skills transfer, technological advancement, and stability for future generations.

On May 16th, 2024, the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development signed a contract with Xcalibur for the provision of nationwide airborne geological services in Zambia.
