Zambian army has seven days to withdraw troops from Congolese territory

The Congolese government reports that it has won its case with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the dispute between the DRC and Zambia. The latter has a moratorium of seven (7) days in order to withdraw its troops present in the south-east of the DRC.

According to the Congolese authorities, the two disputed towns (Kibanga and Kalubamba) in Tanganyika province are indeed an integral part of the DRC, SADC ruled.

“The Minister of Defence briefed the Council on the latest developments in the DRC-Zambia border dispute. After reviewing the border dispute between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the SADC seized by the DRC has just decided that the towns of Kibanga and Kalubamba are part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was given 7 (seven) days by the Zambian Army to evacuate his troops. said the minutes of the Council of Ministers, chaired on Friday (July 24th) by Felix Tshisekedi.

The Zambian army had invaded the territory for more than two months. The Congolese side, which had put the diplomatic option on the table,  referred the matter to the SADC for arbitration in this case.

“At the news, the President of the DRC reiterated his desire to see Africans united and united around multiple challenges,” the government added.

It remains to be seen whether the decision will be enforced by Zambia. Meanwhile, the DRC is overrun by armies from other countries including CAR, South Sudan, Angola without mentioning foreign armed groups and rebellions.
