Zambia’s Energy Minister Launches 58-kW Solar Microgrid in Chama District
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote has inaugurated the 58-kilowatt Manga Solar Microgrid in Chikwa, Chama District. The project, part of the Chikwa Wash Energy initiative led by World Vision, represents an investment exceeding 18.5 million Kwacha.
During the commissioning, Minister Chikote highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access across Zambia. “We have a vision and a plan to ensure the continued expansion of power to serve our nation,” he stated.
He also emphasized the need for the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) to collaborate with stakeholders to guarantee the sustainability of such initiatives.
World Vision Country Director Marc Nosbach praised the project’s role in empowering the community. “The solar microgrid powers Samanga Primary School, benefiting 382 students and seven teachers. This provides learners access to modern technologies,” he said.
Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri urged local residents to protect the new infrastructure. “Let’s not throw stones at the solar panels; let’s take care of them,” he appealed.
Meanwhile, Chipata Diocese Auxiliary Bishop Gabriel Msipu called on the government to improve roads and crossing points in Chama South, noting that better infrastructure is essential for the community’s development.
Chama South MP Davison Mung’andu commended President Hakainde Hichilema for driving transformation in the area. “The machines are here, the money is available. Come 2026, the people will vote for HH,” he declared.
This project reflects the growing emphasis on renewable energy solutions in Zambia, showcasing a collaborative effort to bridge energy gaps and foster community development.
