Zambia’s Maamba Collieries Rebrands to Maamba Energy, Doubles Power Capacity

Maamba Collieries Ltd, Zambia’s leading independent private power producer, has rebranded to Maamba Energy Ltd to better reflect its core focus on energy production.

This rebranding aligns with the company’s ambitious plan to double its electricity generation capacity from 300 MW to 600 MW, aiming to address Zambia’s critical power deficit.

“Energy is our primary business, and the new name Maamba Energy better reflects that,” said Chief Executive Officer Lt Col Cyrus Minwalla (Retd). “Coal sales have been merely an adjunct to our core power business.

As the new name suggests, the company aspires to be a significant player in the energy space in the region as a long-term strategy.”

Maamba Energy, jointly owned by Nava Bharat Singapore Pte Ltd (65%) and ZCCM-IH (35%), is expanding its current 300 MW power plant in Maamba, Sinazongwe, by adding an additional 300 MW unit.

This expansion will significantly enhance Zambia’s energy security, diversify the electricity supply mix, and bolster the country’s much-needed baseload generation capacity.

Currently, Maamba Energy’s generation capacity accounts for almost 14% of Zambia’s installed capacity, making it the nation’s largest independent power producer.

The increased capacity will be pivotal in mitigating the nation’s power shortages and supporting sustainable economic growth.
