Zambia’s Mines Minister Warns Mining Licence Holders Against Illegal Mining
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has emphasized that the responsibility to curb illegal mining lies with licence holders, not the government. He warned that licence holders allowing illegal activities on their tenements risk losing their licences.
In a media briefing last week, Kabuswe clarified that according to the Mines and Minerals Act, it is the duty of licence holders to ensure security on their tenements.
He specifically addressed concerns about illegal mining at Sensele Mine, stating that the government does not own the mine, and the responsibility for preventing illegal activities falls on the licence holders, who are private individuals.
Kabuswe cautioned that the government will take action against any licence holders failing to manage illegal mining on their properties, highlighting that this includes operations across the country.
He stressed that while the government intervenes in cases where public safety is at risk, such as the incident in Kasempa where police clashed with illegal miners, the primary responsibility remains with the licence holders.
He also addressed recent criticisms from Transparency International Zambia (TIZ), urging them and similar institutions to verify information before making public statements.
Kabuswe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability but emphasized the need for civil society organizations to ensure accuracy in their reporting.
Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa echoed Kabuswe’s sentiments, encouraging TIZ to engage with the government directly to verify facts before releasing statements.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining credible and respected institutions that hold the government accountable based on accurate information.
