ZEMA Reports Surge in Environmental Assessments Amid Rising Investments in Zambia
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has announced a substantial increase in environmental assessments, with the Environmental Assessment Committee (EAC) evaluating 125 projects valued at US$563 million in August alone.
Mining and mineral processing projects dominated the evaluations, accounting for 64 of the projects. This was followed by infrastructure development with 22 projects, and the energy sector with 21 projects.
In terms of investment value, the manufacturing and processing sector led the way, contributing US$347 million from 16 projects.
The energy sector followed with investments totaling US$147 million, while mining and mineral processing secured US$38 million.
Addressing the ongoing energy crisis, ZEMA approved four solar power projects with a combined capacity of 100 MW and sanctioned the construction of two power transmission lines by ZESCO Limited.
From January to August 2024, ZEMA processed a total of 816 projects, marking a significant rise from the 642 projects handled during the same period in 2023.
The total investment value of approved projects this year reached US$4.25 billion, a notable increase from US$2.5 billion last year.
In response to the growing demand for environmental services, ZEMA plans to open new offices in Central and Luapula Provinces and has recruited Honorary Inspectors to strengthen compliance monitoring efforts.
Additionally, the agency has digitized its processes through the e-ZEMA and Government Service Bus (GSB) online platforms to enhance efficiency.
ZEMA encourages developers to practice self-regulation and conduct environmental audits while urging the public to report any environmental concerns.
