ZESCO Enhances Energy Reliability Following Maamba Energy Resumption
ZESCO has announced that it will be able to provide a more reliable and consistent energy supply during the scheduled hours of load shedding starting Wednesday, following the resumption of full operations at Maamba Energy on Tuesday evening.
During a media briefing in Lusaka, Transmission Operations and Trade Director Justin Loongo revealed that ZESCO has secured a guaranteed 400 megawatts of power imports during off-peak and standard times.
However, he noted that “for peak periods, inputs will depend on availability, and at peak times, all countries want to domesticate power.”
In addition to these developments, ZESCO has resubmitted a new application to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) for an emergency tariff adjustment.
Fitzpatrick Kapepe, ZESCO’s Head of Business Development, indicated that the utility company has proposed reducing tariffs for customers consuming below 200 units in its application.
Kapepe explained, “We are proposing to reduce tariffs for the first 200 units. Currently, a customer spends 44 Kwacha on the first 100 kWh; we propose that this be reduced to 35 Kwacha, which represents a 20% decrease.”
Customers using between 100 and 200 kWh will also see significant reductions in their bills. Kapepe emphasized that the goal of these resubmitted emergency tariffs is to provide relief to low-income earners.
