South Kivu: four artisanal diggers died of asphyxiation in a mining square in Misisi

Four artisanal diggers lost their lives last Saturday in a gold mining pit located in the mining square of Misisi, a locality in the Ngandja sector, in the territory of Fizi. According to local sources, these diggers died of asphyxiation. The bodies were pulled from the basement.

“Four artisanal miners lost their lives due to lack of oxygen following the sudden stoppage of the engine that supplied air to the well. This Sunday the bodies were pulled from the well and buried after authorization from the local authorities”, indicates Munga Norbert, the deputy coordinator of the new civil society of Ngandja.

Last Thursday, another digger died in similar conditions in Nyange. In addition to the lack of oxygen, cases of landslides are frequent causing deaths in the gold mining pits of the territory of Fizi.
