Angola: Port of Lobito Records Improved Ship Movements
Angola’s second largest port, the Port of Lobito, has recorded an increase of 7.57% in ship movement since 2022, with 351 ships docked at the port handling 1,332,451 tons of cargo in 2023.
Announced by Celso Rosas, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Lobito, it was highlighted that the port collected revenues of more than $16.6 million in 2023.
Despite an increase in ship movements, however, the Port of Lobito recorded a reduction of 14.9% in terms of tons of cargo while simultaneously recording a decrease of approximately 5.72% in revenues.
“This reduction was mainly based on the impact of port tariffs, the fluctuation of the currency, as well as the international situation that, in a way, has affected world maritime trade,” Rosas stated, adding, “We have made an effort to honor our commitment to our suppliers.
From a total of oil debts, at the beginning of 2023, in the order of more than 26 billion Kwanzas ($31.3 million), we were able to repay more than 620 million Kwanzas ($746.5 million), thus improving our relationship.”
Rosas also indicated that customer debt to the Port of Lobito amounts to over $38.5 million, significantly impacting the company’s liquidity and debt collection plan.
With regards to human capital investment, over 42 training programs have been carried out at the Port at all levels, while over 12,557 consultations were carried out at the Lobito Port Clinic, showcasing the health of works as one of the biggest concerns for the Board of Directors
