CEC Green Bond Listing to Boost Zambia’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience

The recent listing of the Green Bond by the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has been hailed as a significant stride towards supporting Zambia’s Green Growth Strategy, according to Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, Minister of Green Economy and Environment.

Speaking during the CEC Green Bond Listing Ceremony, Hon. Nzovu emphasized the pivotal role of public-private partnerships in advancing the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Green Bond listing not only opens up Zambia’s capital markets but also aligns with the nation’s determined contribution to reducing carbon emissions, as outlined in its Green Growth Strategy.

Hon. Nzovu, represented by Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, highlighted the bond’s role in mobilizing financial resources to lower carbon emissions, supporting a green agenda for the nation.

Hon. Nzovu underscored the importance of climate change mitigation initiatives, especially in forestry, agriculture, and energy sectors.

In the energy domain, the Ministry has prioritized a shift towards green and renewable sources like biogas, solar, and wind. Efforts are also directed at enhancing energy use efficiency and reducing electricity transmission losses, with a target to decrease GHG emissions by 25,147.2 GG Co2 (equivalent) by 2025.

Expressing satisfaction with CEC’s 34 MW solar plant, which has offset over 14,000 tonnes of carbon, Hon. Nzovu encouraged more participation in solar energy generation within the energy sector.

He believes that increased investments in solar energy will propel Zambia toward meeting carbon emission reduction targets, marking a significant step towards climate resilience.

Hon. Nzovu assured the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the private sector in achieving their green ambitions, emphasizing the broader benefits for both individual institutions and the entire nation.

The Green Bond listing by CEC stands as a pioneering development, signaling Zambia’s proactive stance in becoming more climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable.
