Botswana sells troubled state-owned mine to Canada’s Premium Nickel Resources

Canada’s Premium Nickel Resources (PNR) will buy Botswana’s defunct, state-owned BCL copper mine with a view to restarting operations within three years, Minister of Minerals, Green Technology and Energy Resources Lefoko Moagi said late on Tuesday. PNR was awarded an exclusive right to undertake six months of due diligence on BCL, placed under liquidation in 2016, in February. It has now signed a deal to purchase two of the three shafts at the site and some associated infrastructure, Moagi said, without disclosing a value. “All the assets that have not… Read More Here

World’s cobalt supply deficit is shrinking, says S&P

A market deficit for cobalt is shrinking as the world’s top producers of the prized metal expand production to meet the demand for batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), according to a new report by S&P Global Intelligence.  With a spoke in EV sales this year, demand for cobalt drove major producers to plan to increase output at mine sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and balance the market, says S&P.   Some EV-makers have begun seek alternatives to the battery metal, which provides stability to the battery cathode, but is costly and linked to allegations of human rights abuses of artisanal miners in the DRC. Market Intelligence says the metal… Read More Here

Copper price falls on China power squeeze worries

Copper prices fell on Wednesday as investors reduced risk exposure amid uncertainty caused by a power curtailment in China. The most-traded November copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell 0.9% to 68,600 yuan ($10,609.00) a tonne. On the Comex market in New York, copper for delivery in December fell 0.5% from Tuesday’s settlement price, touching $4.222 per pound ($9,288 per tonne) midday Wednesday. Power restrictions in China have hurt supplies of some metals in recent months, but electricity curbs recently spread to more downstream sectors and dampened manufacturing, hurting the demand for… Read More Here
