Rongxing tailing dam collapse poisons a stream in Zambia

On Thursday, a tailing dam at Rongxing Investment Limited collapsed, spilling suspected acidic content into the Luela stream in Chambishi. The effluent killed different fish species and also caused damage to crops around the water body. A variety of vegetables cultivated along the stream wilted while others were covered in mud. The spillage happened at Rongxing Investment Limited, a copper processing company located on the Kitwe-Mufulira road. Fitch Ratings has assigned Canada-based First Quantum Minerals Ltd’s (FQM; B-/Stable) new 6.875% USD1.5 billion notes due 2027 a final senior unsecured rating of ‘B-‘. The Recovery Rating is ‘RR4’. The notes are senior unsecured obligations of FQM, and rank pari passu with and benefit from the same guarantor group (representing around 38% of consolidated EBITDA) as the existing notes.
