Mopani Copper Mine Moves Operations to Care and Maintenance

Copper mining company Mopani Copper Mines plc said on Tuesday that it had placed its mining operations on care and maintenance and a number of projects on hold. Mopani, owned 73.1% by Glencore, is an integrated copper producer located in the Copperbelt of central Zambia.  The announcement, the company said, followed a number of meetings with Zambian government Ministries to provide an update of its comprehensive operational review. China Nonferrous Mining Corp (CNMC) said late on Monday its parent had agreed to sell its 74.52% stake in the company to the group’s engineering arm for 7.36 billion yuan ($1.06 billion) in a restructuring move. State-owned China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group is selling its 2.6 billion shares to its 33.75%-owned subsidiary, China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction, known as NFC,  according to a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange, which did not provide a reason for the move.   Glencore has signed a five-year deal to supply battery maker Samsung SDI with up to 21,000 tonnes of cobalt, the miner and trader has said. An expected boom in demand for electric vehicles has pushed battery and car makers to finalize  supply deals for key raw materials such as cobalt.
