Energy exports from Mozambique to other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries could increase this year, strengthening Mozambique’s position as an important regional electricity provider. Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) and AFD signed a EUR100M non-sovereign concessional loan agreement to contribute to the financing of the plant’s 10-year rehabilitation program, the “Capex Vital”. This program, aimed at extending the life of the plant equipment by at least 25 years, includes the refurbishment of the power plant and the electrical substation. State power utility ZESCO has agreed in international arbitration in London to pay Maamba Collieries Ltd $518 million by August to settle arrears outstanding arrears for power supplied. Maamba through its parent company Nava has been pursuing international arbitration against ZESCO for outstanding debt.
