Gemfields upgrades security amid human rights concerns

Gemfields is stepping up efforts to increase transparency and ensure security and human rights are protected at its operations. Kagem Emerald Mine Lockdown Due to COVID-19

Kagem Mining has stopped operations at its emerald mine in Lufwanyama to protect employees during the coronavirus pandemic. “The wellbeing of Kagem’s employees and communities is our top priority. As a result, all but critical operations at the Kagem Emerald Mine have been suspended for a maximum of one month from March 30, 2020, ”said Dr. Sixtus Mulenga, Board Chairman of Kagem. Macroeconomic researcher Fitch Solutions expects that the Congolese budget deficit will widen from an estimated 0.7% of gross domestic product in 2019 to 1.1% in 2020, owing to declining revenues from the mining sector. The Congolese mining sector has a major bearing on government revenues, accounting for about 36% of total government revenues in 2018.
