Iron ore prices surged on Monday as Chinese steelmakers continue to demand cargoes at a record-breaking pace amid a building boom in the world’s second-largest economy. Most metals markets will move into surplus in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, according to Fitch Solutions latest market report.  The research agency has revised down its forecasts for both consumption and production of metals for a number of countries over recent weeks. “Operational hurdles as a result of covid-19, especially for smelters located in countries where governments ordered lockdowns, and voluntary production curtailments as a result of the collapse in metal prices will result in lower 2020 metal production compared to our previous forecasts,” Fitch analysts say. ARM Gets Green Light to Load Iron Ore Amid COVID-19 Lockdown

African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) said on Thursday it had received the green light from South African authorities to load iron ore from stockpiles at its joint venture mines despite a 21-day nationwide coronavirus lockdown.  The diversified miner said Assmang, a 50-50 venture with Assore, had received authorization from the mines ministry to operate its load-out stations at the Khumani and Beeshoek mines to distribute iron ore from the mines’ respective stockpiles.
