In an interview with Mining Review Africa, President Marna Cloete of Ivanhoé Mines says that Ivanhoé’s Kipushi mine redevelopment project in the DRC is expected to produce its first copper concentrate in the third quarter of next year. The Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver-lead mine in the DRC is adjacent to the town of Kipushi, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Lubumbashi on the Central African Copper Belt. Kipushi is approximately 250 kilometres southeast of the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex and less than one kilometre from the Zambian border. Ivanhoe acquired its 68% interest in the Kipushi Project in November 2011, through Kipushi Holding which is 100%-owned by Ivanhoe Mines. Argonaut Resources, an Australian mineral exploration company, has been embroiled in a legal dispute over the Lumwana West exploration license in Northwestern Zambia. The license was cancelled and re-granted to a newly registered company, prompting Argonaut’s subsidiary, Mwombezhi Resources, to appeal the decision. In the first instance, it was announced that the Zambian High Court ordered the Minister of Mines to decide on the appeal within 30 days.
