DRC Mining Experts Seek Innovative Solutions for Sector Challenges

The Presidential Council for Awareness of Strategies (CPVS) initiated the second edition of the National Framework for consultation among stakeholders in the mining sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday, November 13, 2023.

The overarching theme of these meetings is “Exploring Innovative Solutions to Effectively Address Challenges in the DRC’s Mining Sector.” The primary objective is to devise strategies for enhancing the governance of the mining sector in the country.

Deputy Minister of Mines, Godard Motema, commended the initiative, emphasizing its goal of generating reflections for the implementation of innovative solutions to mitigate challenges that persistently plague the DRC’s mining sector.

Motema expressed his optimism, stating, “Today’s initiative is commendable in generating reflections for the implementation of innovative solutions to tackle the challenges facing the mining sector of the DRC.

It aligns with the concerns that have consistently motivated the ministry.” He hopes that the discussions in these meetings will yield concrete proposals to address the sector’s challenges.

Motemona acknowledged that despite prior initiatives, challenges persist in the mining sector, necessitating ongoing efforts. He highlighted a recent evaluation in Zongo in Kongo-Central, focusing on the revised Mining Code and regulations from 2018, aimed at diagnosing issues and finding appropriate solutions.

François Muamba, outlining the CPVS’s role, emphasized its responsibility for monitoring and evaluating the President’s commitments within the government program.

The CPVS identifies challenges in policy implementation, proposing priority areas and innovative interventions to enhance the well-being of the Congolese population.

Muamba acknowledged the substantial challenges impeding the mining sector’s progress, advocating for a collaborative strategy.

He emphasized the importance of the National Framework’s second meeting as an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute expertise and innovative approaches to find solutions to the intricate problems hindering the sector’s development.

Notably, the mining sector is the largest contributor to the DRC’s national budget. Proper governance of this sector has the potential to significantly increase the country’s revenue and contribute to its economic growth.
