Angola Ramps Up Electrification for Six Million Consumers

The government of Angola, through the Ministry of Energy and Water, has vowed to provide electricity to some six million people in the country’s southern and eastern regions in the next five years.

The plan – which is part of a wider government strategy to provide half of the country’s total population with energy access by 2025 – includes the use of the 520 MW Capanda Dam which is located in Malanje province to power consumers in Huambo and Huila provinces in the central and southern parts of the country.

The government is yet to make a final investment decision for electrification projects targeting the southern parts of the country, according to H.E João Baptista Borges, Minister of Energy and Water.

“The important thing now is to bring electricity production to the south and east of the country, where diesel is still used for energy production,” he said.

As part of electrification measures underway for consumers in the eastern parts of the country, the government has developed a transmission line to transport electricity for consumers in Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Bié and Malanje provinces.

The pledge comes at a time less that 40% of Angolans have access to electricity and the government is fast-tracking the diversification of the energy mix through the development of renewables energies and the optimal exploitation of the countries hydrocarbon resources.
