Zambia Reinforces Commitment to Clean Energy at London Summit
Zambia has reaffirmed its dedication to clean energy and sustainable development during the high-level Summit on the Future of Energy Security, currently taking place in London.
Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote is leading the Zambian delegation at the two-day global event, co-hosted by the United Kingdom and the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The summit brings together key ministers, investors, policy experts, and energy stakeholders to foster international cooperation in tackling emerging challenges within the energy sector, including digitalization, climate change, and the growing adoption of renewable energy technologies.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Minister Chikote highlighted Zambia’s progress in energy reforms and expressed the country’s ambition to attract international investments into its energy sector.
The Minister also participated in a strategic roundtable breakfast with the UK Foreign Secretary and the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, where the discussions focused on partnerships to accelerate clean energy deployment.
In a significant bilateral engagement, Minister Chikote met with the Head of the UK International Energy Unit.
They discussed Zambia’s potential membership in the Global Clean Energy Alliance (GCEA), a UK-led initiative launched at the 2024 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The GCEA aims to strengthen clean energy partnerships between developed and developing nations.
The summit takes place amid increasing global pressure to improve energy resilience. According to the IEA, clean energy sources—including renewables and nuclear—accounted for over 80% of the growth in global electricity generation last year.
Investments in clean energy reached nearly $2 trillion during the same period, demonstrating the global shift toward sustainable energy systems.
Zambia’s active participation at the summit underscores its strategic goal of securing a cleaner, more resilient, and secure energy future.
This report was issued by Speedwell Mupuchi, First Secretary Press at the Zambian High Commission in London.
