Zambia’s Copper Boom Draws Global Investment as Production Ambitions Rise

Zambia’s Copper Industry Enters New Growth Era as Global Investment and Production Surge

Zambia’s position as one of Africa’s leading copper producers is attracting growing interest from international investors as the country seeks to expand production, develop new mining projects and strengthen its role in global copper supply chains.

Zambia produced a record 890,000 tonnes of copper in 2025, marking a significant increase in output and reinforcing the country’s position as a major copper producer.

The government has set ambitious targets to further increase production over the coming years, supported by new investment in mining, exploration, processing and infrastructure.

The country’s copper industry has attracted significant investment from companies and investors from China, the United States, Canada, India and other markets.

These investments span mining operations, exploration, processing, infrastructure and mining services.

The growing international interest reflects copper’s increasing strategic importance to the global economy.

The metal is essential for electricity networks, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, construction, data centres and other technologies driving electrification.

Several major mining companies are expanding existing operations or developing new projects in Zambia, creating opportunities to increase production while extending the life of established mines.

Zambia is also seeking to capture more value from its mineral resources by encouraging local processing and greater participation by domestic businesses.

Expanding refining and processing capacity could create additional opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, logistics and other mining-related industries.

Infrastructure and electricity supply remain critical to achieving these ambitions. Higher copper production will require reliable power, improved road and rail networks and efficient transport corridors capable of moving larger volumes of minerals to international markets.

Zambia’s position at the centre of southern Africa’s Copperbelt also provides access to several regional trade routes. Continued investment in rail and road infrastructure could help reduce logistics costs and improve the competitiveness of Zambian copper exports.

The expansion of the copper industry could have wider economic benefits, including increased government revenues, employment, foreign investment and opportunities for local suppliers.

However, sustaining long-term growth will depend on maintaining a stable investment environment, improving infrastructure, ensuring reliable electricity and creating conditions that encourage continued exploration and development.

With copper demand expected to remain strong as the global economy moves toward greater electrification, Zambia is well positioned to play a larger role in the international copper market.

The country’s growing investment pipeline therefore represents an opportunity not only to increase copper production, but also to build a broader and more integrated mining industry that generates greater value across the domestic economy.
