Tenke Fungurume Delivers $31 Million in Community Projects to Strengthen Local Development
TFM Completes Major Community Development Projects in DRC, Boosting Education, Health, and Agriculture
Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) officially handed over the second batch of community development projects under its 2021 specifications on December 11, 2025, marking a significant milestone in its partnership with local communities.
The projects, representing a commitment of over $31 million, aim to address priority areas including education, agriculture, infrastructure, health, youth training, and women’s empowerment.
Education Initiatives
Education was a central focus of this handover phase. TFM delivered five fully equipped primary schools in Mpumpi Gare, Sangana, Tshilongo, Mwanga Musonge, and Kafwaya. Two nursery schools were inaugurated in Tenke and Nguba, and the vocational school in Lukotola was fully renovated, enhancing access to education from early childhood through vocational training.
Health and Sanitation Support
In the health and sanitation sector, TFM provided seven new garbage trucks and 28 metal waste bins—four trucks for the Fungurume municipality and three for the Bayeke chiefdom.
This initiative represents the first deployment of community-level waste management equipment in the region, supporting public health and environmental protection.
Agricultural Development
Agriculture, a cornerstone of local livelihoods, also received substantial support. TFM commissioned a 450-tonne agricultural warehouse in Lukotola and constructed a new shed for agricultural tractors. As part of the 2025-2026 agricultural season, the company handed over agricultural inputs for the cultivation of 1,500 hectares of maize, strengthening food security and improving crop yields.
Community Handover
All infrastructure was formally handed over to local development committees (CLD), representing the Fungurume municipality, led by Mayor Aline Makano, and the Bayeke chiefdom, represented by Mwami Godefroid Munongo.
The ceremony was attended by high-level officials, including the provincial Minister of Mines (represented by the head of the provincial mining division, Alain Kayombo), provincial deputies, and numerous partners.
TFM General Manager Li Lei Zhong reaffirmed the company’s long-term vision:
“In January 2021, TFM committed to investing over $31 million in community development projects to directly address the needs of communities within our concession. Four years later, we are seeing the tangible results of this commitment.”
He highlighted the delivered infrastructure as proof of TFM’s dedication to improving living conditions and praised the collaborative spirit among all stakeholders.
Voices from the Community
Mayor Aline Makano urged the community to protect and maintain the new infrastructure:
“I invite all beneficiaries and residents to preserve, enhance, and take ownership of these public assets so they can sustainably serve current and future generations.”
Mwami Godefroid Munongo commended TFM for the high quality of its projects, while the provincial Minister of Mines, Wamana Tanda Nicodème, praised the company’s adherence to national laws and regulations, positioning TFM as a benchmark for responsible mining practices.
Earlier in 2025, TFM delivered additional projects, including a 200-cubic-meter industrial borehole supplying drinking water to thousands of residents, illustrating the scale and impact of its corporate social responsibility programs.
As the 2021–2025 specifications approach completion, most projects have been delivered, with the remaining initiatives in their final stages. These specifications form a cornerstone of TFM’s social responsibility strategy, representing a long-term investment in community development that continues to enhance livelihoods and build a more prosperous future for the region.
