DRC and TotalEnergies Discuss Strategic Ruzizi III Hydropower Project

DRC Government and TotalEnergies Hold Talks on Ruzizi III Hydropower Project to Boost Energy in Eastern Congo

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Daniel Mukoko Samba, received a delegation from TotalEnergies in Kinshasa to discuss progress on the strategic Ruzizi III Hydroelectric Project.

The delegation was led by Ronan Masseron, Country Chair for the Africa Division in the Great Lakes region, accompanied by Baba Moussa Diallo, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing DRC.

Strategic Energy Project for Eastern Congo

Discussions focused on the development of the Ruzizi III hydropower project, located on the Ruzizi River, which is intended to supply electricity to both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.

The project is considered a key initiative to strengthen energy security in eastern Congo while supporting industrial growth and urban development in the region.

During the meeting, TotalEnergies representatives presented an update on the project’s progress, highlighting technical and administrative challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate implementation.

They also outlined prospects for moving the project forward in a regional context marked by improving stability and growing economic cooperation in the Great Lakes region.

Government Support for the Project

Minister Mukoko Samba reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Ruzizi III project for the Congolese economy.

He also pledged to relay the concerns raised during the meeting to the relevant authorities to ensure that pending issues are reviewed and addressed promptly.

Environmental and Sustainability Considerations

Beyond its economic potential, the Ruzizi III project raises significant environmental and sustainability considerations.

Experts note that while hydroelectric dams are a major source of renewable energy, they can also affect aquatic ecosystems, alter natural hydrological cycles, and impact nearby communities if not carefully managed.

According to specialists consulted on the project, its long-term success will depend on the implementation of rigorous environmental impact studies, fair compensation mechanisms for affected populations, and transparent governance practices.

A Model for Regional Energy Cooperation

Observers say the Ruzizi III initiative illustrates the complexity of large-scale infrastructure projects that combine economic, technical and environmental priorities.

The involvement of government leaders such as Daniel Mukoko Samba, industry representatives including Ronan Masseron and Baba Moussa Diallo, and multidisciplinary technical teams highlights the need for coordinated collaboration to ensure the project’s success.

If implemented effectively, Ruzizi III could become a model for sustainable energy cooperation in the Great Lakes region demonstrating that the development of green electricity can go hand in hand with environmental protection and responsible resource management.

Experts believe the project has the potential to serve as a pilot initiative, showing how energy innovation and environmental responsibility can be balanced to benefit both regional economies and local communities.
