Alphamin Leads DRC Cassiterite Production in Q1 2025 Amid Operational Challenges

Alphamin Resources, operator of the Bisie tin mine in Walikale Territory, North Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), accounted for the majority of the country’s industrial cassiterite production in the first quarter of 2025.

According to data from the Mining Coordination and Planning Unit (CTCPM), Alphamin produced 4,104 tonnes of cassiterite, representing approximately 88% of total industrial output during the period.

However, this figure is lower than what Alphamin reported in a press release issued on April 9. The company stated that it had produced 4,270 tonnes of contained tin in Q1 2025, before suspending operations on March 13 due to safety concerns.

This discrepancy suggests that Alphamin’s actual cassiterite output for the quarter may be higher than what was recorded by the CTCPM.

The second-largest producer during the same period was MMR, which accounted for 540 tonnes of cassiterite—equivalent to 12% of the total industrial production.

In a press release dated June 5, Alphamin announced a major shift in its ownership structure. Tremont Master Holdings (TMH), the company’s majority shareholder with a 57% stake, has entered into a definitive agreement to sell 718,990,967 of its common shares—approximately 56% of the company’s total outstanding shares—to International Resource Holding (IRH), based in Abu Dhabi.

The transaction is valued at CAD 503.3 million (approximately USD 367 million), or CAD 0.70 per share, subject to final adjustments.

Alphamin resumed mining activities at Bisie in early April after a temporary suspension caused by regional instability.

The shutdown followed the capture of Goma and Bukavu by M23/AFC rebels, reportedly backed by the Rwandan military, in January and February 2025.

The rebels briefly occupied Walikale Territory—where the Bisie mine is located—but withdrew after negotiations with the Kinshasa government.

Despite the security challenges and ownership changes, Alphamin remains a key player in the global tin supply chain, with its Bisie mine being one of the highest-grade tin deposits in the world.
