Angola’s electric vehicle fleet grows 100% in 2024

The Angolan fleet of electric cars grows 100 percent, from two thousand cars this year to four thousand in 2024, according to projections by the executive president of CVE Angola, a company that, a week ago, on Saturday, 9, opened, in Luanda, the first charging point for electromotorized vehicles.

Adilson Matoso, in a discussion with Jornal de Angola, shared insights from his market study aimed at launching charging points in Angola.

According to his findings, after the influx of two thousand Chinese vehicles, an additional two thousand are expected from the United States in 2024.

Angola, currently leading in electric mobility among Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations alongside South Africa, faces growing interest from countries like Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Malawi.

However, Matoso highlights concerns hindering widespread adoption, notably the scarcity of charging stations, leaving motorists anxious about potential stops due to insufficient charging options.

Acknowledging the limited government initiatives and lack of legislation promoting electric vehicles, Matoso stressed the importance of private sector involvement.

He emphasized the need for conducive policies to attract investors, stating that the private sector’s role in leading the electric mobility market has proven effective and should continue.

Matoso also noted the potential for rapid investment recovery within a year in the electric vehicle charging sector, considering the current market conditions in Angola.

However, he highlighted the considerable challenge posed by the scarcity of charging infrastructure, citing the vast disparity between Angola and more advanced electric vehicle markets like the EU, China, Japan, and the USA.

The disparity extends to the extensive manufacturing and distribution networks for electric vehicles and associated infrastructure present in these regions.

Major car manufacturers have also announced plans to cease production of fossil fuel vehicles by 2030, signifying a global shift towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.
