Zambian Supreme Court Orders Mopani Mines To Pay Over US$13 Million Tax Debt

MOPANI Copper Mines has been ordered to pay over US $13 million tax liability to the Zambia Revenue Authority-ZRA for the years 2006 to 2010. Of the amount, over US$7.6 million covers tax liabilities from 2008 to 2010 while US$5.4 million caters for the years 2006 to 2008. The order has been made by the Supreme Court in a 63-page Judgement. Chief Justice Ireen Mambilima, Supreme Court Judges Mumba Malila, and Nigel Mutuna handed down the judgment. A STRIKE at China Molybdenum’s Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) was bought to an end after only a day on Sunday, said Reuters citing Willy Kitobo Samsoni, mines minister for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the mine is situated.  The strike was ended after management and workers agreed a compromise over compensation for working in isolation for two months due to COVID-19. AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine in South Africa has been temporarily closed after 164 workers tested positive for the coronavirus, the gold miner said in a statement on Sunday.
