Barrick Academy to Empowering Frontline Leaders for Sustainable Mining

Barrick Gold Corporation has announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing leadership capabilities within its operations in the Africa and Middle East region.

Over the next 24 months, the Barrick Academy will provide specialized training to more than 2,000 foremen, supervisors, and superintendents.

Designed to cultivate individual growth and leadership skills, these tailor-made programs will equip frontline managers with the tools to effectively lead their teams and drive improved performance across operations.

The inauguration of this world-class training facility takes place at the former Buzwagi mine site in Tanzania. This move underscores Barrick’s commitment to leaving a positive legacy in communities long after mining activities have ceased.

Sebastiaan Bock, Barrick’s Chief Operating Officer for the Africa and Middle East region, emphasized the importance of responsible mine closure.

“How we close our mines is just as important to us as how we build and operate them,” stated Bock during the academy’s opening ceremony.

Buzwagi mine, which operated as a significant economic powerhouse for nearly 15 years until its closure in 2021, now transforms into a hub of productivity and community service.

The Barrick Academy stands as a testament to this commitment, fostering skills development and sustainable leadership practices.

The academy’s establishment follows the recent construction of an airport terminal at Buzwagi’s Kahama airstrip, enhancing regional connectivity and paving the way for economic growth.

This infrastructure development is poised to catalyze positive change in the region, aligning with Barrick’s broader vision of responsible resource management and community development.
