Court Grants Appeal in Kabwe Lead Poisoning Case Against Anglo American

The Johannesburg High Court has greenlit an appeal for the class action certification denial involving 140,000 women and children in Kabwe, Zambia, who allege lead poisoning from a former Anglo American mine. Justice Leonie Wendell cited “reasonable prospects of success” and “compelling reasons” for the appeal. The case will now advance to the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa. First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is almost doubling the mammoth tree planting exercise at its Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi. The company is this season planting 30,000 trees and rehabilitating over 35 hectares of mine disturbed land. Last year Kansanshi planted 18,000 trees as part of its commitment to sustainable mining practices and efforts towards environmental conservation. ZAMBIA Revenue Authority (#ZRA) says mining entities are audited on a regular basis and discrepancies have been detected in some of the financial records that have been assessed. ZRA commissioner for domestic tax division Joseph Nonde said the audits in the mines are conducted on a risk profile basis, checking for specific queries that need to be addressed.
