There is nickel and chromium in Kasai, DRC but not yet exploited due to lack of electricity

The coordinator of the Sino-Congolese Program Coordination and Monitoring Office (BCPSC) or “Chinese Contract”, Moïse Ekanga, revealed in an interview with the Belgian media “La Libre Afrique” that at the beginning the Chinese were interested by the exploitation of Nickel and Chromium ores in Kasai but they changed their minds later because of the lack of electricity in the region. “In 2007, when we started talks with China, we thought we would sell them chromium and nickel. Russians appeal to Elon Musk against Nornickel

A group of indigenous people in Russia are asking Tesla’s Elon Musk to stop buying supplies from miner MMC Norilsk Nickel until the company compensates them for environmental damage to their ancestral lands.  “The lands of indigenous people appropriated by the company for industrial production now resemble a lunar landscape,” members of the Aborigen Forum network wrote in an open letter to Musk this week. “Traditional use of these lands is no longer possible.” The group is asking Nornickel to assess the damage from a massive fuel spill in the Arctic earlier this year, revise… Read More Here

Philippines to overtake Indonesia as global largest nickel producer

Global nickel production will drop significantly over 2020, as major producer Indonesia’s nickel ore export ban comes into effect, Fitch analysts assert in a recent report. This drop will be slightly offset by the impact of rising production growth in the Philippines where some currently suspended mines will become operational again, while the country aims to plug the likely supply gap caused by the Indonesian export ban, Fitch says. Analysts maintain other major producers such as Russia, Australia and Canada will maintain stable production growth year-on-year.  Global nickel ore production will fall by 15.4%… Read More Here
