China Launches First High-Capacity All-Solid-State Battery Production Line
China Advances Electric Vehicle Technology with Breakthrough All-Solid-State Battery Production
China has completed construction of its first high-capacity all-solid-state battery production line, marking a significant milestone toward the commercialization of next-generation battery technology widely regarded as critical to the future of electric vehicles.
The production line was developed by state-owned automaker GAC Group and is currently undergoing small-scale trial production. It is the first facility in China capable of manufacturing automotive-grade all-solid-state batteries with capacities exceeding 60 amp-hours.
All-solid-state batteries differ from conventional lithium-ion batteries by replacing liquid electrolytes with solid materials. This design significantly reduces fire risks while enabling higher energy density, addressing two of the most pressing challenges in electric vehicle development: safety and driving range.
According to Qi Hongzhong, head of research and development for new energy propulsion at GAC’s Advanced Platform Technology Institute, the energy density of the company’s all-solid-state batteries under development is nearly double that of current lithium-ion cells.
He explained that vehicles with a current driving range of just over 500 kilometres could potentially exceed 1,000 kilometres once equipped with the new battery technology.
GAC Group plans to begin limited vehicle installation trials using the batteries as early as next year, followed by a gradual transition to mass production between 2027 and 2030, as the technology matures and manufacturing processes are scaled up.
