Civil Society Urges Prime Minister to Prioritize Anti-Corruption Efforts in DRC

In a press conference held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Claver Hall in the Gombe commune, members of the civil society platform “Congo is not for sale” (CNPAV) urged Prime Minister Judith Suminwa to make the fight against corruption a top priority in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jean-Claude Mputu, spokesperson for CNPAV, and Jimmy Kande, a member of the organization, highlighted the pervasive nature of corruption in the country’s political and institutional life.

They called upon the future government and the judicial system to prioritize this fight, following a general assembly of their organization in Kinshasa.

CNPAV proposes four key actions to effectively combat corruption. First, they urge the Prime Minister to ensure compliance with public procurement rules and to halt public spending conducted through emergency procedures.

Second, they emphasize the crucial need for justice reform to end impunity and recover misappropriated funds. Third, the platform stresses the importance of integrity and managing conflicts of interest among politicians and public officials.

Lastly, CNPAV calls for transparency and the publication of all mining and public contracts to counteract the opacity that fuels corruption.

During the conference, it was announced that CNPAV, now under new leadership, would expand its national action thanks to the addition of new members.

Recognizing its efforts, CNPAV received the “Anti-Corruption Champion” award from the United States, as shared by Jean-Claude Mputu.

The platform also advocated for the adoption of a law on access to information for citizens, emphasizing its significance in strengthening transparency and civic participation in public affairs management.
