Copper Mark and SSI Partner to Strengthen Responsible Copper Sourcing for the Solar Industry

Copper Mark–SSI Agreement Aims to Boost Responsible Copper Production for Growing Solar Supply Chain

The Copper Mark and the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance responsible copper production and sourcing across the global solar energy value chain.

Announced on November 27, the partnership reflects copper’s crucial role in solar energy generation and transmission. As renewable energy demand accelerates, the need for coordinated action among mining, processing and manufacturing stakeholders has become increasingly urgent.

The agreement aims to link upstream and downstream assurance systems and strengthen transparency in the copper supply chain—from mine to finished solar products.

“We look forward to working with SSI members and connecting them with Copper Mark participants and partners. For example, we hope to jointly deliver chain-of-custody pilots for responsible copper—from mine site to end-user—to promote transparency and demonstrate the business case for responsible production throughout the solar value chain,” said Copper Mark executive director Michèle Brülhart.

SSI CEO Rachel Owens said the collaboration marks a significant step toward a more integrated and accountable approach to sustainability in the solar sector.

“By connecting upstream and downstream assurance efforts, we can strengthen transparency and accountability from raw materials to finished solar products. Together, we aim to create stronger links between the metals and solar sectors, ensuring the rapid expansion of renewables is grounded in ethical, traceable and sustainable supply chains,” Owens said.

A central focus of the partnership will be a sector leadership project that maps value chains, identifies environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and develops strategies to improve performance across the industry.

This initiative supports the Copper Mark’s broader program, the Initiative for Responsible Renewable Energy Value Chains, and will feed into its Responsible Metals Value Chain Platform, scheduled to launch in 2026.

According to both organisations, the project will create opportunities for direct collaboration between companies across the copper lifecycle—including mining, smelting, refining, recycling and fabrication—as well as manufacturers of solar components, equipment and grid infrastructure.

Civil society groups, regulatory experts and academic institutions will also be invited to contribute, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to sustainability across the solar energy value chain.
