DRC and Germany Strengthen Cooperation on Mining Governance and Sustainability

Germany Pledges $50 Million in Mining Cooperation with DRC to Boost Transparency and Sustainability

The Minister of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Louis Kabamba Watunga, received a delegation from the German Cooperation on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in Kinshasa.

The delegation was led by the chargé d’affaires of the German Embassy. The meeting marked an important step in strengthening ties between Berlin and Kinshasa on strategic mining sector issues.

The visit, described as a courtesy meeting, focused on ongoing bilateral projects, particularly those related to mining governance, transparency, and sustainability.

According to the German diplomat, Germany’s cooperation portfolio in the DRC’s mining sector currently stands at an estimated $50 million.

“This is the first visit by Germany and our agencies to meet His Excellency the Minister and review all bilateral initiatives in preparation for the cooperation portfolio in the mining sector, which is substantial, currently around $50 million,” the diplomat said after the meeting.

She further noted that discussions addressed the Minister’s action plan and outlook for common priorities in the coming years.

Minister Louis Kabamba Watunga welcomed Germany’s growing engagement, emphasizing the DRC’s commitment to responsible and equitable resource management. He underlined that future partnerships must prioritize:

Local processing of minerals

Community benefits

Environmental and social responsibility

Germany, eager to secure reliable access to critical minerals essential for its energy and digital transition, is expanding its partnerships with resource-rich nations such as the DRC.

This collaboration aligns with Germany’s strategy of fostering sustainable cooperation, built on principles of transparency, mineral traceability, and compliance with international environmental and social standards.

Path Toward Deeper Dialogue

This first high-level meeting between the DRC’s Ministry of Mines and German Cooperation lays the foundation for more in-depth dialogue on:

Mining investments

Institutional capacity building

Support for ongoing sector reforms

By working together, both nations aim to create a mining sector that supports economic development, community prosperity, and long-term sustainability.
