DRC and Rwanda Sign Landmark Peace Agreement in Washington with U.S. Backing
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda signed a landmark peace agreement on Friday June 27 2025, in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the United States.
The accord seeks to end the long-standing conflict in eastern DRC, a crisis that has claimed millions of lives over the past decades.
Described as a historic breakthrough, the agreement commits both nations to restoring peace and stability in their territories and across the broader Great Lakes region of Africa.
The United States played a central role in brokering the agreement, with President Donald Trump warning of firm consequences for any party that fails to uphold its commitments.
“If anyone violates this agreement, there will be consequences,” President Trump stated, signaling the potential for strong financial, military, and diplomatic sanctions against violators.
The agreement builds upon the Declaration of Principles adopted by both countries in April 2025, emphasizing respect for territorial integrity, the cessation of hostilities, and a shared commitment to peace—particularly in eastern DRC, where the M23 armed group has launched recent offensives.
Beyond its security dimensions, the accord also outlines a framework for enhanced economic cooperation between DRC and Rwanda. Key areas of collaboration include:
Hydroelectric energy projects
Joint management of national parks and biodiversity
Mineral resource traceability and transparency
The two countries aim to strengthen their partnership through regional mechanisms such as the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the East African Community (EAC).
These platforms are expected to support regional integration, improve economic governance, and curb illicit cross-border trade.
With this agreement, DRC and Rwanda have taken a bold step toward resolving one of Africa’s most enduring conflicts.
If implemented in good faith, the Washington Agreement could mark the beginning of a new era of peace, development, and regional cooperation in Central Africa.
The international community will be watching closely to ensure that both parties honor their commitments—offering hope to millions affected by conflict and displacement.
