DRC Authorities Close Kanshi Commune’s Artisanal Diamond Mine to Protect Resident Safety
The artisanal and clandestine diamond mine in the Kanshi commune of Eastern Kasai was officially closed on Monday, October 21, 2024, to safeguard the lives of local residents, as stated in a report from the Council of Ministers.
“The governor announced the permanent closure of the artisanal diamond mine in Kanshi and the establishment of enhanced surveillance measures to prevent further tragedies,” the report noted.
This decision follows a series of fatalities linked to clandestine diamond mining activities, primarily conducted by young residents, which have resulted in significant loss of life and material damage. The closure was enacted during a visit from the governor, accompanied by the provincial Minister of Infrastructure.
Illegal diamond mining in residential areas of Mbuji-Mayi has become a recurring issue, particularly in the communes of Bipemba and Kanshi, where residents have converted their residential plots into diamond mining sites, as reported by local authorities.
In addressing the population of Kanshi, interim governor Augustin Kayemba Mulemena urged parents to prioritize their children’s education over exposure to dangerous mining activities.
“Young people must go to school. Their place is not in artisanal diamond mines searching for survival for the family. Anyone found in this ravine will face legal consequences,” the governor warned.
