DRC Battery Council Charts Ambitious Path to Battery Value Chain Integration

The Congolese Battery Council (CCB) unveiled its year-long vision at Kinshasa’s Hilton Hotel on December 11, 2023, following its formation in December 2022.

This significant event gathered industry experts, government officials, and investors to outline the council’s mission.

Established with a purpose to attract investments, foster innovation, and develop technology for processing strategic minerals, the CCB is dedicated to supporting the electric battery industry.

By ensuring a consistent supply of raw materials to battery manufacturers, the council aims to align with President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi’s vision for local integration of battery value chains.

Julien Paluku, speaking on behalf of the ministry, emphasized the move away from the previous export-oriented model, aiming for local transformation to maximize value.

This shift aligns with the global energy revolution to combat climate change and promises immense developmental opportunities for the DRC, its population, and the wider African region.

In partnership with Canadian multinational CVMR, represented by CEO Khozan Kamran and International Affairs Director Bryan Mccollow, the CCB launched its initial feasibility study, themed “The Value Chain in Motion.” This six to eight-month study intends to set up the first metal refining unit, marking the second phase in the value chain.

Denis Lecouturier, Director General of the CCB, stressed the monumental potential and challenges in integrating the value chain.

He highlighted the substantial industrial and developmental benefits this project could bring to the DRC while positioning the nation as a regional development cornerstone.

Makimba Mungomba Jérôme, Chairman of the Board of Directors at CCB, provided assurance about the council’s operational readiness, stating that it possesses all necessary tools to fulfill its objectives.

The CCB’s creation, organization, and operation were established through a draft decree adopted during the 71st meeting of the Council of Ministers.

This technical structure is crucial in executing the President’s ambitious plans for a competitive battery value chain.

It collaborates with Battery Councils of other nations, fostering cooperation through established agreements.
