DRC Engages EU on Peace and Aid as PM Suminwa Meets Great Lakes Envoy
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka met with Mr. Johan Borgstam, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, to discuss the EU’s continued support for humanitarian aid and peace initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“It was a very warm exchange,” said Borgstam. “We discussed the EU’s support for humanitarian operations in eastern DRC, ongoing peace processes, and development cooperation projects. The EU has already delivered over 100 tons of humanitarian aid, now in Goma.”
He also welcomed recent diplomatic progress, particularly the signing of a Declaration of Principles between the DRC and Rwanda in Washington on April 25, 2025. “I commend the DRC government for its commitment, especially through the Washington agreement.
It’s vital to preserve the progress made through regional processes, such as those in Luanda. This is a significant step forward,” Borgstam said.
The Declaration of Principles, brokered with U.S. mediation, marks a major diplomatic milestone. Under the agreement, the DRC and Rwanda have committed to respecting each other’s sovereignty, ending support for armed groups, and enhancing cooperation on regional security.
The declaration also outlines plans to finalize a comprehensive peace agreement by May 2, 2025, reinforcing hopes for long-term stability in the Great Lakes region.
