DRC Government promises drastic measures against fraud at border posts

The Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, chaired, this Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the traditional meeting of the Economic Situation Committee which reviewed several issues related to the smooth running of the country on the socio-economic level for the week of May 22 to 26, 2023. 

In addition to the prices of goods and services on the markets and the exchange rate which have remained more or less stable as well as the foreign exchange reserves which have held up well, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the National Economy, who account of this meeting to the press, nevertheless, reported on the fraud observed at the borders and the appropriate measures, which are envisaged to put an end to it.

“We can tell people that regarding the economic situation, market prices are more or less stable, as is the exchange rate. We also notice that foreign exchange reserves are more or less maintained in a stable way. positive. However, we have noted the fraud which is organized at all levels of our borders and measures will be taken regarding this. We have also noted the issues relating to the business climate, that is to say, the hassles the banks and the economic operators are the object. But in the search for the solution and the measures which will be announced, we want fair measures, which do not make the State condemn the State and give reason to the economic operators and vice versa.We want justice on that side to protect economic operators and, at the same time, protect the state,” said VPM Vital Kamerhe.

The thorny issue related to the import of corn was also addressed.

 “We also talked about the last measure that had been taken on the import of maize, particularly in Katanga. Thanks to the last mission that we personally led, there is a series of proposals that have been made at the level of the Council of Ministers. This is an opportunity to thank the Zambian Government. Recently, we signed a joint communiqué on the materialization of the export as far as Zambia is concerned and the import as far as we are concerned for this commodity. which is widely consumed in Katanga and Kasai. So each Minister will certainly receive assignments from the Prime Minister to restore order on the Kasumbalesa-Lubumbashi road so that this flour reaches the markets of Lubumbashi in fair price”,he indicated.

It should be noted that the other members of the Government, in particular the Minister of State in charge of the Budget, the Minister of Foreign Trade, the Deputy Minister of Mines, the Deputy Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank of Congo took part in this meeting.
