DRC Minister of Mines Visits Kolwezi to Strengthen Mining Sector Governance
The Minister of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Louis Watum Kabamba, has been in Kolwezi, the capital of Lualaba province, since Thursday, September 18, 2025, as part of an official mission to engage directly with mining sector stakeholders.
Welcomed by Governor Fifi Masuka and other provincial authorities, Minister Kabamba explained that the visit reflects the central government’s commitment to strengthening mining governance and maximizing the sector’s economic benefits for both the province and the nation.
During his discussions with the Chamber of Mines operators and local public officials, the minister addressed several key issues, including:
Management of the minimum 0.3% turnover allocation (DOT) intended for local communities
Encroachment of industrial sites by artisanal miners
Supervision and regulation of artisanal mining activities
Minister Watum emphasized the need for closer coordination between central and provincial authorities to develop sustainable, collaborative solutions to the sector’s challenges and ensure the responsible development of mining resources.
