DRC produced 18,052 tonnes of tin or cassiterites by the end of September 2020, up 11% compared to the same period in 2019

The Democratic Republic of the Congo produced 18,052 tonnes of cassiterites in the first 9 months of 2020 compared with 16,192 tonnes in the same period in 2019, an increase of 11.4%, according to data from the Central Bank of Congo.

A total of 22,601 tonnes of cassiterites were produced over the whole of 2019 against 16,273 tonnes in 2018 and 17,682 tonnes in 2017.

Cassiterite, from the Greek kassiteros (tin), represents the main ore for the extraction of tin with a grade that can exceed 78 p. Because of its economic value, it is mined even in low grade deposits (from 0.5%). Without cassiterite, the main ore of tin, cell phones, medical imaging or televisions, none of this would exist. Without tin, no connections, therefore no electronics.
