DRC–Rwanda Peace Agreement Celebrated During Osaka Economic Briefing

DRC Hails Historic Peace Accord with Rwanda During Economic Forum in Japan

On the sidelines of the DRC–Japan Economic Forum in Osaka, a special briefing was held by Patrick Muyaya, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Communication and Media.

He was joined by Minister of Foreign Trade Julien Paluku and the DRC Ambassador to Japan, Professor Lukumwena Nsenda.

The briefing came just one day after the signing of a historic peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, witnessed in Washington, D.C., by former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

In his opening remarks, Minister Muyaya hailed the agreement as a diplomatic turning point and the result of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi’s persistent efforts to restore peace in eastern DRC.

“This agreement opens a new horizon for the suffering populations of the East,” Muyaya stated, while emphasizing the importance of vigilance in ensuring that all parties uphold their commitments.

He also suggested that Donald Trump could be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize for his role in facilitating this breakthrough—comparing it to historic diplomatic achievements such as the Camp David Accords of 1978.

Muyaya encouraged the Congolese public to read the peace agreement thoroughly to understand its significance and avoid misinterpretation.

After nearly three decades of conflict in eastern Congo, he said, this agreement marks a critical step toward lasting stability, national reconstruction, and sustainable development.

Minister of Foreign Trade Julien Paluku described the agreement as a “masterstroke” by President Tshisekedi and expressed strong confidence in U.S.-led mediation, citing its historical effectiveness.

“Agreements signed under the auspices of the United States have consistently yielded lasting results,” Paluku noted.

Ambassador Lukumwena Nsenda also reflected on the symbolic timing of the peace accord and the DRC–Japan Forum, calling it more than a coincidence.

“The alignment of the peace agreement in Washington and the DRC-Japan Forum in Osaka is not a coincidence—it’s a sign of destiny,” he said.

The event was part of “DRC Week” at the Osaka World Expo, held from June 23 to 30, 2025. Led by Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, the Congolese delegation presented a forward-looking vision of the nation centered around innovation and development under the Expo’s overarching theme: “Designing the Society of the Future: Imagining Our Life Tomorrow.”
